for Carl …

for Carl Sagan (november 9, 1934 – december 20, 1996)

when you visited us each week,
                    stirring wonder in all,

billions of synapses fired,
or according to my teachers at the time,
         misfired!

                           and yet you comforted us,
                          your reason,
             logic,
                       and,

dedication to the facts and always,

                              always
            to the science,
               and to science,

mentored us.

… and so as you left us here on this pale blue dot,

you still live in the starstuff,

the stuff of life,
mingling with the infinite depths of the cosmos,

                      and as you taught us,
that there are more stars in the universe than all the grains of sand on all the beaches of earth,

still your vision lives within us all,
                       a testament to your humanism,
                    your genius,
your warmth and all that you left behind,

& that, that humanity of yours,

shall live on in the imagination of this speck of starstuff,
                as it floats,
on the vastness of the great cosmic ocean …

( dedicated to the memory of Dr. Carl Sagan )

the physics of love

made of starstuff*, you and i, the random crossed paths of our orbits, reaching deeper into the quarks and gluons that bind us together, tiny strings, weaving a tapestry of oneness.

made of starstuff, you and i, intertwined synapses flowing through neural networks, somehow, in the ways of the cosmos, fusing these two beating hearts together.

made of starstuff, you and i, the unfathomable meeting of mind and soul, beyond the knowable, yet forging the knots, linking us in an unending entanglement of distilled love.

made of starstuff, you and i, the touch of our lips, the feel of our heartbeats, the brushing of our fingertips, remaining so inexplicably unquantifiable,
and felt,

so deeply immeasurable.

the illusion of control

the illusion of control …

image

… so, life happens,
our infinitesimal plucking of strings,
somehow brings,
an idea, a glimmer of hope,
of control, an illusion really,

of just sort of kind of knowing on the whole,
just how the paths we dream up, are to be tread,

and so,

we weave, we dance,
oblivious to the fickle whims of chance,

we joust, parrying jabs,
picking at wounds,
scratching under scabs,

seeking this, that, whatever,
speeding on highways bound for never,

wearing our hearts on our sleeves, baring all, unashamed,

emotional sentimentality fluttering amongst dead autumn leaves,
starkly transparent,

yearning for that early ache,
that wondrous sensuality of synapses, sparking,
inflaming that early rush,

leaving me numbed,
in my shallow sewer, impotent and dumbed,

wasting away, lost in the well,
where no pebble ripples back

for Dr. Carl Sagan
1934 – 1996

wishy-washy happy-clappy weekend blah-de-blah …

the essence of your soul
distilled

in a drop of pure rainwater

an equilibrium

the celestial gyrations of intersoular desires

the
essential elements drawn mystically together

the quantum realms of loves past and emotions lost

memories like cigarette burns

tease
at first

then
trickle
and
smoulder

and crash
like splintering cutglasss

in every universe
ever inhabited

in each drop
of each tear

falling to the living earth

absorbing the spirits of past bygones

karmic destiny
predestined theatre

who’s left to tell

but yourself

gently subtly soothingly
cleansing your mind

at rest
at long last

having found the truth
within you

a truth that seemed so distant once

so elusive

yet always
resided within you

always
embedded so
deep

always remaining
so perenially
pure

and eternally so

oh-so-very
so very true …
