for my mother (1934 – 2008)
she left me, with the thoughts of her embrace to warm me, in frigid mornings of tomorrows yet to come.
she left me, with words of tender truths to shroud me, in the coming evenings of stabbing sleet.
she left me, yet she stays within me, in my waking dreams, my restful thoughts.
she stays forever within me,
of me she shall remain an abiding part,
of the love.
the pain.
the tears.
so that we shall never be truly apart …

thank you, my friends … yup I was born in Delhi in the autumn of ’72 😊
spent 6 years there before my parents were posted elsewhere.
my parents were in the African National Congress, in the struggle against Apartheid in South Africa, so I travelled around quite a bit until the release of President Nelson Mandela in 1990. Travelled back to South Africa in late 1990 among the first batches of returning political exiles.
Peace, my friends ✌

Dear Lord! Afzal that was truly revolutionary literally. Your story/history/lineage is remarkable, to say the least. Written with such fluidity, it almost transported me to the High Treason trial (although I cannot fathom for the life of me, the hardship of the true revolutionaries of that era, I wasn’t even born then when you were witnessing the shifts (literal and otherwise). An inspirational read, with pangs of sadness, it was an unputdownable book for me. My Significant Other is yet to read it but I’m sure he will thoroughly enjoy it as much as I did. Thank you for sharing.
P.S. the photos were delightful.

thank you very very very much, my dear friend, for such high praise for my meagre scribble. I consider myself very fortunate to have ‘escaped’ the brunt of hardships my parents and siblings had to endure. My parents always reminded me that we were the lucky ones to have witnessed the culmination of the fight against racism and racial domination. thank you again for such warmth and for such heartwarming sentiments expressed. My warmest wishes to you and to your significant other. As the the South African concept of uBuntu espouses “I am, because we are” – we all share the same strands and are the richer for it. many many thanks again! with warmth and the kindest regards.
Peace and love ✌
