Gone are the white masks and sheets,
today the KKK struts in plain sight,
on nameless blood-soaked streets.
The past still lives,
breathes,
spewing hate,
stereotyping and profiling and generalising,
‘the Nigger deserved it’,
they still say,
as they continue to hate,
and to slay.
Justice is blind,
we are so often told,
but it’s deaf,
and mute,
and can be,
and is,
bought and sold,
just as they once,
traded,
bought,
sold,
flogged,
whipped,
lynched,
and raped human-beings,
and just as each of those human-beings of colour was called a slave,
today, in the 21st century,
a person of colour,
still better ‘know’ his or her ‘place’,
or face the racist murderers’ hate,
and be shot down,
and be clubbed
and be beaten,
to an early, shallow grave

The militarization/authoritarianism of the police must end. Several decades ago, they referred to citizens respectfully as sir and ma’am, there, whose job really was to serve and protect. All I see now with many cops is pure rage and hate and a jumping on any and every chance to do harm towards people and the things people hold dear – property, pets, kids, freedom…and I’m not an ethnic minority.

thank you for your heartfelt sentiments. yes, the ‘us’ & ‘them’ mindset that has become more entrenched in the 21st century is more than just disheartening, it’s lethal as we’ve witnessed not just in the US but all over the world where the powers-that-be are increasingly militarising what should be a ‘civilian’ Police that, as you say, should ‘protect & serve’ and not intimidate, and as is happening so disturbingly often, the killing of people, almost always the disenfranchised and those who have been left on the margins as the illusory fiction of ‘progress’ is pursued, with no regard for the rights of people & with contempt for the planet & the environment. Thanks again and we LIVE with hope! Always!
